Asheville publishes Affordable Housing Guide

Press release from the City of Asheville:

One of the most significant barriers to economic prosperity for America’s lowest-income families is the lack of decent, accessible, and affordable homes. Research shows that when people have stable homes that they can afford, they are better able to find employment, achieve economic mobility, age in place, perform better in school, and maintain improved health.

The City of Asheville recognizes that finding quality affordable housing is a challenge. That’s why Community and Economic Development is publishing a local guide to help residents learn where affordable housing exist and tips on tapping into available homes.

The Local Guide to Asheville Affordable Housing touches on common complaints that residents express:

  • Affordable units: The guide list more than 50 local properties with affordable units.
  • Code enforcement: If you feel your rental unit is not up to housing code, the guide has the appropriate contact, City of Asheville’s Housing Code Enforcement Officer Russell Roe by phone at 828-259-5764.
  • Legal services: Pisgah Legal Services (PLS) has a Homelessness Prevention Project for those in danger of eviction or foreclosure or living in substandard conditions. The number to call is 828-253-0406.

The City, in partnership with Lotsar, will print 1,000 copies of the guide to distribute to agencies across the community. In addition, the guide will be available on Community Development’s Affordable Housing webpage. In partnership with the community and local stakeholders, the City will update the list every January to keep the list current and relevant.
