Gershom Gorenberg, author of The Unmaking of Israel and senior correspondent for The American Prospect, will give a talk, “The Second Israeli Republic: Why It’s Needed and How to Get There,” at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13 in UNC Asheville’s Sherrill Center, in the Mission Health Mountain View Conference Room. He will describe the development of Israeli democracy. He will also discuss policies he feels places it in danger, and his proposals to preserve and renew the Israeli republic.
Gorenberg’s The Unmaking of Israel (HarperCollins, 2011) was one of Newsweek’s Ten Best Books of the Year. Gorenberg is also the author of The Accidental Empire: Israel and the Birth of the Settlements, 1967-1977 (Holt Paperbacks, 2007) and The End of Days: Fundamentalism and the Struggle for the Temple Mount (Oxford University Press, 2002).
Gorenberg, an American-born resident of Jerusalem, has written in Hebrew for Ha’aretz and in English for The New York Review of Books, The New York Times Magazine, and The Atlantic. As a commentator on Middle East affairs and the interface of religion and politics, Gorenberg has appeared on 60 Minutes, Nightline, Dateline, Fresh Air and on CNN and BBC.
