Ben’s Tune-Up to host free Oktoberfest celebration

Ben’s Tune-up, a downtown Asheville restaurant and biergarten, will hold its first annual Oktoberfest Celebration Noon – 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. Admission is free.

Festivities will begin at noon with the tapping of special Oktoberfest kegs from Heinzelmännchen of Sylva; Pisgah Brewing of Black Mountain; Highland Brewing of Asheville; Hofbräu of Munich, Germany and Foothills Brewing of Winston Salem, N.C.

Family-friendly activities will be offered early in the day, including face painting, games and costumes. The event will also feature German polka music from accordionist Steve Burnside (of Lagerhosen fame) and the joyful noise of the Asheville Second Line. Other highlights will be a hotdog eating competition (advanced registration required), horseshoes, a meet- up of local home brewers, strong-man/woman competitions and an evening performance by Outer Banks surf rockers Eddy and the Riptides.

Guests can come dressed in the spirit of Oktoberfest and vie for a prize during the costume competition at 6 p.m.
