The Authors for Literacy Dinner & Silent Auction, an annual event benefiting The Literacy Council of Buncombe County, takes place on Friday, Sept. 11. New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci will give the keynote address.

Press release from event organizers:

On Sept. 11, New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci will keynote the Literacy Council of Buncombe County’s 8th Annual Authors for Literacy Dinner & Silent Auction. David Baldacci has published 29 best-selling novels for adults as well as four novels for younger readers, with 110 million books in print worldwide. His next book, The Keeper, will be released three days before the event.

The Authors for Literacy Dinner & Silent Auction featuring David Baldacci will begin with a cocktail silent auction to include distinctive art and crafts, autographed and rare books, and priceless opportunities to enjoy excursions in Asheville and beyond. Following the cocktail hour, event guests will enjoy a three-course dinner and presentation by a current Literacy Council student. David Baldacci will then give the keynote presentation and autograph guests’ books.

Event guests may upgrade tickets in order to attend a VIP reception with David Baldacci. This reception will include the opportunity to spend one-on-one time taking pictures and talking with the author, as well as enjoy hors d’oeuvres overlooking downtown Asheville.

David Baldacci’s first novel, Absolute Power (1996), was an international bestseller and was adapted into a film of the same name starring Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman. David Baldacci wrote the screen play adaptation of his novel Wish You Well (2013) and it was just released on Blue-Ray and DVD. David Baldacci is also the co-founder, along with his wife, of the Wish You Well Foundation®, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting literacy efforts across America. In 2008, the Foundation partnered with Feeding America to launch Feeding Body & Mind, a program to address the connection between literacy, poverty and hunger. Through Feeding Body & Mind, more than 1 million new and gently used books have been collected and distributed through food banks to families in need.

Proceeds from the Authors for Literacy Dinner & Silent Auction will benefit the Literacy Council’s programs, which provide comprehensive literacy and English language skills to 350 individuals in Buncombe County annually. The Literacy Council gives opportunities to people who don’t believe they have a second chance to learn. Literacy and English language skills are tools that help people rise out of poverty and get better-paying jobs to support their families. Literacy allows parents to read to their children. Improved literacy skills benefit not only the struggling reader, but everyone in our community regardless of age, race, gender, or background.
