Asheville, NC— Asheville City Council member Cecil Bothwell will join supporters of equality in Scouting from across the country on Friday for a National Council Day of Action event. The event is sponsored by Scouts for Equality and will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Daniel Boone Council/Boy Scouts of America offices at 333 West Haywood Street.
Bothwell, an Eagle Scout, former Junior Assistant Scout Master, Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, Boy Scout camp counselor and member of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity (a college service fraternity made up of former Scouts), has publicly urged the national organization to abandon its discriminatory membership practices.
Supporters attending Friday’s event hope to provide Daniel Boone Council executives with a vision of the past, present, and future of the council if the ban on gay members is lifted. From current and former Scouts and leaders to potential Scouting parents, supporters hope to show that a wide range of constituencies are seriously concerned about the direction of Scouting and are urgently calling on the BSA to alter its policies.
Participation in this event is encouraged for those with past or future direct involvement with the BSA, but Scouts for Equality organizers will stage another rally on May 22 in which the general public will be invited to attend.
Scouts for Equality was formed in June 2012, just before the BSA reaffirmed its policy of banning gays in July of that same year.
