Here’s the press release from People of Faith Against the Death Penalty:
For 12th Year, Bruce Springsteen to Host, Endorse Death Penalty Opponents at NC Show
Greensboro, NC – At his Wrecking Ball concert tour stop Monday night at Memorial Coliseum in Greensboro, Bruce Springsteen will encourage his fans to support People of Faith Against the Death Penalty, a national nonprofit group based in Carrboro, NC. This is not the first time the Boss has spoken out for the North Carolina nonprofit.
Springsteen has hosted the group at his concerts in Greensboro, Charlotte, Raleigh and Chapel Hill since 2000, telling more than 140,000 of his NC fans that he is a friend of People of Faith Against the Death Penalty and dedicating songs to the group. At every show Springsteen encourages his fans to support and get involved with PFADP.
“The death penalty is a question of the soul as well as one of public policy and Bruce knows that if people really look at the administration of the death penalty they will not like what they find, with racial bias and wrongful convictions so glaring, leaving victims without any real help, the community brutalized, and taxpayers footing a huge bill,” said Stephen Dear, PFADP’s executive director.
Springsteen donated four tickets and passes to a side-stage E Street Lounge often visited by members of the E Street Band before their shows. PFADP has sold the tickets.
Springsteen hosts local food banks at all of his tours, but PFADP is believed to be the only public policy advocacy group he regularly hosts on his tours.
PFADP will have a literature table and collect donations and petition signatures at the concert.
The Greensboro performance is Springsteen’s only scheduled date in North Carolina on his current Wrecking Ball tour.
People of Faith Against the Death Penalty is a national nonprofit organization founded in 1994 with a mission to educate and mobilize faith communities to act to abolish the death penalty in the United States.
