Buncombe County announces new principals for seven schools

Press release from Buncombe County Schools:

Superintendent Tony Baldwin today announced seven new administrative assignments for Buncombe County Schools for the 2021-22 school year. Several principals announced their retirement earlier this year, creating many opportunities for principals and assistant principals who are currently in the district, and others who will be new to the BCS family! The new assignments are as follows:

Carrie Lynch is the new principal at Avery’s Creek Elementary. Lynch currently serves as the principal at W.D. Williams Elementary and is the 2021 BCS Principal of the Year. Her past assignments include assistant principal at W.D. Williams and Jones Elementary (Asheville City Schools). Avery’s Creek’s current principal, Denise Montgomery, retires this year.

Christy Jones is the new principal at W.D. Williams Elementary. Jones is currently an instructional coach in the Roberson District. Her past experience includes assistant principal intern and classroom teacher at Estes Elementary.

Jeanann Yates is the new principal at Hominy Valley Elementary. Yates is currently the principal at Pisgah Elementary. Her past experience includes assistant principal and classroom teacher for Haywood County Schools. Hominy Valley Principal, Joanne Walker, retires this year.

Katie Harris is the new principal at Pisgah Elementary. Harris currently serves as assistant principal at Enka High School. Her past experience includes classroom teacher at Enka Intermediate and Candler and Hominy Valley Elementary Schools.

Chip Cody is the new principal at Erwin High School. Cody currently serves as principal at the Catamount School at Western Carolina University. His past experience includes serving as principal at Eblen Intermediate and assistant principal at Erwin Middle School. Erwin High’s current principal, Greg Bailey, has retired.

Nick Honeycutt will serve as principal at Weaverville Primary School. Honeycutt currently serves as assistant principal at A.C. Reynolds High School. His past experience includes serving as principal in Madison County Schools. Weaverville Primary’s current Principal, Steve Chandler, retires this year.

Gina Toomey will serve as principal at the Buncombe County Schools Virtual Academy (BCSVA). Toomey currently serves as assistant principal at Owen High School. Her past experience includes classroom teacher at Owen High and Enka High. Ms. Toomey will be the first principal for BCSVA!

“We are pleased to have these strong administrators taking on new roles and responsibilities,” Baldwin said. “We know there is hard work ahead as we all continue to recover in the wake of the pandemic. These are the right principals to take the helm and help lead the way to student success.”

These assignments were approved by the Board of Education at Thursday’s Special Called Board of Education Meeting. Friday morning, senior leadership announced each new principal’s appointment to their respective faculty and staff.
