Buncombe County Republican Party Makes Public Records Request to NC AG Roy Cooper and Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger

October 21, 2013-Amendment One

Asheville, NC- Buncombe County Republican Party Chairman Henry Mitchell has announced an official probe into the recent actions of Buncombe County Register of Deeds Drew Reisingers acceptance of marriage license for same-sex couples.

Buncombe County Republican Party has made official public records requests under the Freedom of Information Act (and other applicable laws) for communications between the NC Attorney General Roy Cooper and Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger regarding the acceptance and possible issuance of marriage license[s] for same-sex couples.

“We have made inquiries that we hope will aid in determining if any laws have been violated,” Chairman Mitchell said. “The people of NC voted in an overwhelming majority, around 61%, for Amendment One and it is our duty to hold public officers accountable to the will of the people”

On October 15th, Buncombe County Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger became the first public official in NC to accept marriage license of same-sex couples while ignoring the NC State Constitution and the recent amendment, often referred to as Amendment One, to define marriage as “Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State…”

“We officially made public records request to Mr. Reisinger and AG Cooper today. We also notified Mr. Reisinger last week that we would be filing a formal request and he has already begun assembling the records requested,” Chairman Mitchell said. “However, he did indicate that most of the communications were conversations over the phone with the AG Public Information Officer and he has not talked to AG Cooper directly, making us unclear on how much information we will actually receive.”

“It is the goal of the Buncombe County Republican Party to protect the NC State Constitution and the will of North Carolinians throughout the state. We will continue to hold public officials accountable and fight political activism against the will of its people.” Chairman Mitchell said.

The Buncombe County Republican Party will announce its findings and keep updates posted to its website and Facebook Pages. You can also find copies of the Public Records request here.

And I’m still hoping the Buncombe GOP will provide the name or names of the people behind the vulgar, racist, misogynist twitter account @WNCGOP. But we’re all learning to live with disappointment.

Republicans concerned about “the will of the people”? Ha ha. Like they did on the national level with the government shutdown? The GOP has a different idea of what constitutes “the people.”
