Buncombe County School Board Candidate Announces Campaign Kickoff

Cindy McMahon, candidate for Buncombe County Board of Education, invites the public to her campaign kickoff on Thursday, March 13 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Reynolds Fire Department, 235 Charlotte Highway (Hwy 74). This will be a kid-friendly event.

“I am looking forward to meeting everyone in the district and hearing what they want in a school board member,” McMahon said. “I hope to learn a lot and make many new friends at the kickoff.”

This event will be hosted by Reynolds Fire Chief Richard Sales and will feature local piano great Chuck Lichtenberger and musical performances by Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan and others.

A suggested donation of $25 per person is requested of attendees. Donations can be made at the door or can be sent to Cindy for Schools, 74 Crayton Rd. Asheville, NC 28803-1302. Checks should be made out to “Cindy for Schools.” Please include name, title, and employer (or “retired” and name of previous employer), and contact information. McMahon and her husband, John, have a son and daughter, Caleb and Katie, at A. C. Reynolds High School. “They have both been in Buncombe County Schools since kindergarten and have had an excellent education at every level,” McMahon said. “My husband and I are also products of public schools. We have all benefited so much, and I would like to use my leadership skills and experience to give back to our schools.”

McMahon is a consultant specializing in business and project management. She is the current Vice Chair of the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority of the City of Asheville.

“I want to use my experience in budgeting, capital projects, and human resources to help make our schools even stronger. I enjoy coming together with others to solve problems, and would like to use those skills to advocate for the students in our public schools.”

There are 42 schools in the Buncombe County school district, serving more than 25,500 students. It is the largest school system in Western North Carolina, the eleventh largest system in the state, and the second largest employer in Buncombe County, employing nearly 4,000 people. The General Election is Tuesday, November 4. McMahon would represent the Reynolds District.

“We need to continue to raise the bar and set expectations for the highest level of services to our students and their families.”
