Flat Rock, NC: (Flat Rock, NC)—Twenty-five candidates will become new citizens during a ceremony at Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site on Tuesday, September 17 at 10:30 a.m. This day is also recognized nationally as Constitution and Citizenship Day in honor of the constitution having been signed on September 17, 1787. This is the fourth year the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service North Carolina Office is hosting a naturalization ceremony at Carl Sandburg Home NHS. The ceremony will take place at the amphitheater of Carl Sandburg Home NHS. The public is invited and those interested in attending the ceremony should plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the program and are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to stand as seating is limited. Portable chairs may be brought to the event and be sure to dress for the weather.
“For new citizens, it’s the chance to take the oath of citizenship in our country’s most significant places – places full of natural wonders and treasured history,” said Tyrone Brandyburg, Superintendent Carl Sandburg Home NHS. “For us, it is the opportunity to reach new audiences and demonstrate the relevancy of America’s national park system,” he said.
Hosting naturalization ceremonies in national parks helps introduce new citizens to some of the nation’s most significant natural resources and cultural heritage sites. These historic and picturesque sites provide an ideal backdrop for citizenship ceremonies, where new citizens can learn about and reflect on American identity and the responsibilities of citizenship.
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park Service, was authorized October 17, 1968, and celebrates it’s 45th Anniversary this year. The park is located three miles south of Hendersonville off U.S. 225 on Little River Road, and is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., daily, except Christmas Day.
