Carrie Buchanan named principal of Hall Fletcher Elementary

Press release from Asheville City Schools:

A familiar face to the Cougar Family has been selected as Hall Fletcher Elementary School’s next leader!

We are pleased to announce Mrs. Carrie Buchanan has unanimously been chosen as the school’s new permanent principal. After reviewing the Hall Fletcher Staff and Families survey results, it was evident that Mrs. Buchanan clearly embodies the characteristics identified by both staff and families in the survey!

Buchanan has been serving as the school’s interim principal since September 2020 and says she’s most looking forward to continuing to build relationships with the Hall Fletcher community. “Relationships with students, staff, and families have always been important to me”, Buchanan said. “I am excited to continue to work with such an amazing staff who is dedicated to building trust and relationships with all students.”

Throughout her seventeen year career with Asheville City Schools, she has proven she can build relationships with all stakeholders and advocate for all students.  Many families said they wanted a student focused principal, able to build relationships with students, staff, and families while keeping equity as a top priority. Buchanan demonstrates this everyday while working with the Hall Fletcher stakeholders.

When surveyed about their vision for a new principal, staff members mentioned Buchanan by name as who they want as their next leader. In fact, since she has served as Hall Fletcher’s interim principal, we have received nothing but positive feedback from staff and families. It is abundantly clear that Mrs. Buchanan has demonstrated her ability to be an effective principal!

Buchanan earned a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood/Elementary Education from North Greenville University as well as her master’s degree in Education with a focus on Reading and Literacy from Walden University. Additionally, she received her National Board Certification in 2008 and her Graduate Certificate in School Leadership from Appalachian State University in 2017.

Having worked in the field of education since 1999, Buchanan has been an elementary and middle school teacher, assistant principal at the elementary and secondary levels. She has been instrumental in all of her positions in promoting student achievement, school improvement, and nurturing the whole child. Some of her proudest moments include taking part in graduation ceremonies and watching students receive their high school diplomas!

“I am looking forward to building an inclusive, collaborative community that inspires the children of Hall Fletcher as we work together to close the achievement gap and ensure the well being of all students.”

When Buchanan is not at school, she enjoys relaxing on her front porch, reading novels and supporting her family, regardless of whether they’re playing or coaching sports.  She is married to Scott Buchanan, a teacher and coach at Asheville Middle School, and together they have three children.  Their daughter, Kendall, graduated from Western Carolina University this past December; she teaches PE and coaches at Enka Middle School.  Their son, Will,  is a freshman at Liberty University where he received a full scholarship for football, and their youngest son, Cooper, is a kindergartner at Hall Fletcher.

Congratulations, Carrie Buchanan!
