Cataloochee Ski Area to host Can-U-Ski Food and Coat Drive, Dec. 7

PRESS RELEASE FROM CATALOOCHEE SKI AREA

Maggie Valley, NC – Cataloochee Ski Area continues its tradition of holiday giving with their 14th Annual Can-U-Ski Food and Coat Drive for Haywood Christian Ministries, on Sunday, December 7.  Record numbers turn out each year for this event as guests are given a free lift ticket valued at $62 for the day in exchange for twenty-four cans of food or two winter coats in good condition.  This season’s food drive comes as Cataloochee enters its second month of daily operations, with skiing and riding from ¾ of the mountain down on ten slopes and trails.

Thousands of cans of food and hundreds of coats are donated to the area during the event.  All donations are given to the local non-profit organization in order to stock its pantry for the Christmas holiday season. Skiers and boarders from across the Southeast come to Maggie Valley to take part. “What better way to start the season of giving than by giving back to your local community to folks in need.” said Chris Bates, Cataloochee Vice-President and General Manager. “We appreciate all of our guests who come out to participate in this worthwhile event.” Many customers typically show up with more than the minimum required to be able to ski for free.

Ticket pickup for this year’s event will be in the Ghost Town parking lot at the base of the mountain.  Guests are asked to leave cans and coats with Cataloochee employees there in exchange for their lift tickets for the day.  Rentals and lessons will be available at the area at regular rates.

Cataloochee’s dedication to early snowmaking has consistently allowed them to be among one of the first areas to open in the country, averaging 123 days of skiing and riding each winter.  Located high in the mountains of Western North Carolina, they are a snowsports playground to many in the Southeast.  Daily operations continue at the area through their projected closing date of March 29, 2015.  Tube World, the area’s snowtubing park in Maggie Valley, four miles from the ski area is also open for the season and operating weekends only until daily operations begin on December 20.

For more information and an up-to-date snow report for both the ski area and Tube World, go to www.cataloochee.com.
