Celebrate Black History Month with Asheville Parks and Recreation events

In recognition of Black History Month this February, Asheville Parks and Recreation is producing a number of programs at community centers across the city.  All events are free and open to the public.

Feb. 7, 6 -8 p.m.: Community Movie Night screening of “Selma”

Location:  Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Center, 285 Livingston St.

Join us for a screening of the film “Selma” with a community panel discussion following the film.  Hosted by Asheville FM 103.3, and moderated by Slay the Mic, panelists will include Dr. Dwight Mullen, Nicole Townsend, Stormey Harper and Maria Young. Free popcorn and drinks.

Feb. 8, 1- 4 p.m.:  Past, Present, Future

Location:  Linwood Crump Shiloh Center, 121 Shiloh Road

A celebration of how far the African-American community has come and where it’s going.  The program includes a potluck meal, guest speaker and a musical performance by a local choir.

Feb. 20, 6 -7:30 p.m.:  Soul Food Supper

Location:  Stephens-Lee Community Center, 30 George Washington Carver Ave.

Enjoy a Soul Food supper prepared by the Stephens-Lee Teen Leadership participants with help from the East End Valley Street Neighborhood and Stephens-Lee Alumni.

Feb. 24, 6- 8 p.m.:  Documentary Screening

A screening of the 2018 documentary Power to Heal: Medicare and the Civil Rights Revolution followed by a group discussion.

Feb. 27, 6- 8 p.m.:  Tell Your Story

Location:  Burton Street Community Center, 134 Burton St.

Gather with us to share your history and knowledge of the Burton Street Community and see what our afterschool students have created in conjunction with the LEAF Schools and Streets program. Dinner provided.

Feb. 28, 6 – 7 p.m.:  Celebrating Black History/Afterschool Project

Location:  Dr. Wesley Grant, Sr. Southside Center, 285 Livingston Street

Don’t miss our afterschool youth presentations about local African American leaders, their history, and their heritage.  This evening is the finale of a month-long project to research these important residents from the Southside community and other local neighborhoods.
