ASHEVILLE – CrossFit Pisgah announces they are hosting the inaugural “River Ruckus,” a 2-day CrossFit competition to be held on the banks of the French Broad River in Asheville’s River Arts District on April 6-7, 2013. The event is part of the national Garage Games series and marks the first regional CrossFit competition to be held in the Asheville area. Major sponsors of the event are ModPaleo, RiverLink and Wodlife.com.

Saturday’s events will comprise the individual competition, while Sunday’s schedule will be comprised of the team competitions. Response to the first-year event has been overwhelming. Nearly 100 individual competitors are signed up to compete, and over 50 4-person teams are on Sunday’s rosters. Competitors and teams from as far away as Atlanta, Columbia, Knoxville and even New York are attending.

Each day’s schedule will be comprised of 4 workouts that combine movements from various disciplines such as powerlifting, endurance, Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, mobility and other areas. Divisions include Rx (advanced), Scaled (beginner/intermediate), Masters (40+) and Youth (elementary/middle/high) divisions. There is a $500 cash prize for the first place winner in the Rx male and female individual, as well as Rx team categories. Teams are made of up 4 people and can be comprised of any combination of male/female.

CrossFit is defined as constantly-varied functional movements performed at high intensity. Currently, there are over 5,000 CrossFit affiliates, including 3 in Buncombe County. CrossFit Pisgah relocated to the River Arts District in October and has over 100 members and Buncombe County’s only CrossFit Kids program.

Indoor events will be held at CrossFit Pisgah (151 W. Haywood Street), while the outdoor events, vendors and awards will be held at RiverLink’s Performance and Sculpture Park at 172 Riverside Drive. Spectators are welcome to attend free of charge. A number of vendors and booths are scheduled to be on-site, including Progenex, EarthFare, Beyond Organic, Highland Brewing, modPaleo, WODAddiction, Hurt Locker, WODLife.com, and others.
