Dementia Friendly WNC hosts open house on Nov. 4

Press release from Dementia Friendly WNC:

Dementia Friendly WNC is holding an Open House on Monday, November 4, 2019, from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm at Brooks-Howell, 266 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville. The Open House welcomes persons living with dementia, their families, friends, and any members of the community interested in learning more about Dementia Friendly WNC.

Dementia Friendly WNC is a grass roots organization dedicated to the well-being of people living with dementia and their families through a welcoming and knowledgeable community. This organization works with organizations to create opportunities for engagement for people living with dementia and does so through interactive dementia awareness sessions to faith groups and businesses, providing information to decrease stigma and teaching skills to help make communities more dementia friendly.

Organizations participating in their awareness sessions report that they are making changes to support a more inclusive environment that is more welcoming and easier to navigate for persons living with dementia. Brooks-Howell, a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community, was the first Certified Dementia Friendly business and provides specialized respite and long-term care for persons with dementia.

The Open House begins at 11:00 am with a light lunch served at noon, followed by a presentation at 12:30 pm. For more information, contact Dementia Friendly WNC at 828-348-7261 or www.dementiafriendlywnc.org.
