Professional drummer Nikki Glaspie of The Nth Power has teamed up with Independent Arts and Music of Asheville (IamAVL) to create an online tutorial designed to offer aspiring percussionists tips, techniques, and tricks of the trade. The instructional drum workshop, presented by Echo Mountain Recording Studios and Guitar Center, is part of a series IamAVL has developed called Skill Sets intended to help musicians perfect their craft. Nikki’s Skill Set is now available for rental and purchase on Vimeo. In October, you can catch Nikki showcasing her expertise with The Nth Power on their fall tour.
“For a long time people had been asking me why don’t you put out an instructional video,” says Glaspie, ”and for a long time I didn’t have the drive to do so. I then realized that since I have a voice, I should say something. My manager pushed me to do this and I’m glad she did. I was thinking to myself, what am I going to talk about for an hour and a half? And by the end of it, I was like, wait, there’s more!”
Nikki Glaspie has been drumming since she was eight years old. She has received formal training from Berklee College of Music and is best known for her work as a touring musician with the Queen B herself, Beyonce. Glaspie laid down beats for Jay-Z, Kanye West, Karl Denson, Ivan Neville, Dumpstaphunk, R&B legend Chaka Khan, George Porter Jr. of The Meters and many more before forming her own supergroup of world-class musicians, The Nth Power.
In the spring of 2016, IamAVL approached Nikki about doing an instructional workshop video in a series called Skill Sets. Skill Sets is a platform that integrates video production, in-studio recording sessions and live performances into one seamless channel of high-quality content. Skill Sets is a live tutorial led by a musician who has mastered his/her craft. Sessions are recorded at Echo Mountain Recording Studios in downtown Asheville, NC and are intended for local musicians and players from all over the world to access for valuable tips and advice from industry professionals. Nikki’s Skill Set was taped in front of an intimate live audience where attendees were encouraged to interact and ask questions throughout the event. Funk and soul quartet The Nth Power will be releasing their dynamic new live album, To Be Free, on November 11, 2016. The band recorded the nine-track album in July during two nights of live performances in Boston, MA and one night in the band’s hometown of Brooklyn, NY. Seven songs on the album represent new material for the band. Starting in October, the band will embark on a fall tour.
