Press release:

Eat Local Shop Local to Help Local Businesses and United Way

Eat Local Shop Local is United Way of Transylvania County’s annual fund-raiser focusing on keeping things local. At this point, 34 restaurants, retailers and other businesses have signed on to take part in Eat Local Shop Local on Saturday, May 13.

Participating businesses have pledged to donate 10 percent of sales on that day to United Way of Transylvania County. Look for the Eat Local Shop Local logo in shop windows and on “yard signs” in front of participating businesses.

“It’s our pleasure to participate in Eat Local Shop Local every year,” said April Lamb, owner of Bracken Mountain Bakery.

To see a complete list of participating merchants, go to unitedwaytransylvania.org. The Eat Local Shop Local rotor image features clickable links leading directly to each business partner’s internet information.

Taking ‘mom’ out to eat or shopping to celebrate Mothers Day (a day early) on Saturday, May 13, at an Eat Local Shop Local business will generate many levels of local good. It’s a win-win-win for the local businesses, shoppers and the local programs United Way supports.

“United Way of Transylvania County relies on the support of local business partners, and those business partners rely on their customers. Eat Local Shop Local spotlights how we can all work together to direct funds to local actions, helping our neighbors,” says Brynn Green, Community Development Director for United Way.

”I’m proud to be part of this United Way fundraiser. We invite and encourage everyone to come on in and do their part,” comments Paul Hawkins, Local Color owner.

“We still need about $57,600 by June to meet our pledge goal of $510,000. We need every penny to support United Way’s community services like VolunteerTransylvania.org, TransylvaniaResources.com, and 2-1-1, and local actions that count on our United Way,” Green continued.

People who expect to be out of town or who are otherwise unable to participate in Eat Local Shop Local are encouraged to support the community by donating directly to United Way of Transylvania County.
