ECO Earth Stewardship Day brings community together in service

Press release from ECO, Environmental and Conservation Organization:

ECO Earth Stewardship Day Brings Community Together in Service
(HENDERSONVILLE, NC, May 7, 2014) — On Saturday, May 3, almost 70 volunteers participated in four environmental service projects throughout Henderson County for the third annual Earth Stewardship Day sponsored by the Environmental and Conservation Organization (ECO).  Community groups, families, businesses, government departments, and environmental organizations worked side by side on projects that preserve our natural resources and create community assets to be enjoyed for years to come.
Each projects was hosted by an ECO committee, and included a garden expansion project at the Girl Scout Hut at Edwards Park, organized by members of the Energy & Sustainability Committee; building and planting raised beds at 7th Avenue Community Gardens with the Recycling Committee; a landscaping and garden clean-up project at Upward Elementary with the Water Quality Committee; and stream buffer restoration with Western North Carolina Alliance, the City of Hendersonville Engineering and Public Works Departments, and ECO’s Green Infrastructure Committee.
“The work of volunteers yielded impressive results,” said Mary Jo Padgett, ECO Executive Director. “Students, co-workers, friends, and families enjoyed productive exercise on a gorgeous spring day.  And the completed projects continue the legacy of environmental stewardship throughout the county.  Several of the projects expanded on work completed during the first and second Earth Stewardship Day events.”
Earth Stewardship Day 2014 was sponsored by Biz611.com, HomeTrust Bank, Danny’s Dumpster, NC Printing, and Three Chopt Sandwich Shoppe. We thank these businesses for their community support.
