Asheville, NC (February 4, 2012) – On Groundhog Day, Heath Shuler, a former football quarter back, and soon to be former congressman, saw the shadow on the wall and threw in the towel. Mr. Shuler announced that he will not seek re-election to the North Carolina 11th District US House of Representatives. Seems the Republican team was too much for Mr. Shuler. In her statement, Nancy Pelosi said “Congressman Shuler will be missed by his colleagues on both sides of the aisle and we wish him the best in his next steps.” Reports are that Mr. Shuler may return to athletics when his name was floated as an athletic director candidate at the University of Tennessee, his alma mater, and where he was the starting quarterback on the football team.
“In throwing in the towel, Shuler provides Republicans with an opportunity not only to pick up the seat, but to ensure that North Carolina families have a Representative that truly represents their values,” said National Republican Congressional Committee spokeswoman Andrea Bozek.
Mr. Shuler leaves the field to 10 declared Republican contenders including the leading candidate, Dr. Dan Eichenbaum. As a long time practicing ophthalmologist in far west North Carolina, Eichenbaum has restored vision to thousands of people. But, it is his vision of government that has drawn the attention of the people of the 11th District. “Like the founding fathers, it is my platform based on the principles of limited government, individual freedom, personal responsibility, fiscal restraint, and free market economy, that is resonating very, very well with the folks,” Eichenbaum said. “We have an active and aggressive grassroots movement in western North Carolina and I have a small army of volunteers.”
Two days before Mr. Shuler’s announcement, the Cherokee County 9-12 Project and Tea Party joined the North Carolina Independence Caucus in endorsing Eichenbaum. Visit www.drdan4congress.com/issues to read more about “Dr. Dan”.
