Experience Mountain Heritage at the 18th annual Stecoah Harvest Festival
Mountain traditions come alive at the 18th annual Harvest Festival in beautiful Stecoah Valley. The festival takes place October 17– 19, 2014 at the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center on the grounds of the historic Stecoah Union School. The former community school was built in 1926, and today is home of the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Southern Appalachian mountain culture.
The school buildings and 10-acre grounds make the perfect canvas for this three-day event beginning with a free Friday evening campfire and music JAM. Saturday begins at 8:00 am with the Dry Creek Climb 5K race. Then from 11 am – 5 pm, the grounds are filled with the sounds of mountain music and dancing feet. Performers include the Stecoah JAM Kids, Graham County Line, The Britthaven Band, The Wilson Family, Grandpa’s Music, The Jones Girls, The Welch Family, Valley River Trio and The Oktoberfest Square Dancers.
Local artists offer their handmade crafts and foods for sale, and demonstrations of corn-grinding, apple cider pressing, rail splitting add to the excitement. Don’t miss Breedlove Farm’s Fainting Goats and the horse show on the ball field. The Country Fair features competition and exhibits of jams, jellies, pies, cakes, quilts, needlework and much more. There’s even a quilt exhibit and the Quilts of Valor will also be on display. Saturday admission is just $3/adult and free for kids K-12 and younger; parking is free.
Saturday evening at 7:30pm on the grand old stage, enjoy the Grammy Award Winners, The Steeldrivers. Get your tickets early to make certain you won’t miss a great performance. Adult tickets are $25 and Students (K-12) are $10. Tickets may be purchased online at StecoahValleyCenter.com, by calling 828-479-3364 or in person at the Center.
On Sunday, October 19 there will be free gospel singing in the auditorium from 2:30 – 5:00pm featuring The Barker Family and the Smoky Mountain Boys. There is something for everyone to enjoy at the annual Stecoah Harvest Festival.
