Flat Rock hosts Blue Ridge Spectacular bridge tournament June 22-25

From the Henderson County Tourism Development Authority:

Duplicate Bridge Players Are Invited to Compete in Flat Rock Tournament

Duplicate bridge players will converge on the Blue Ridge Community College Campus in Flat Rock, June 22 though June 25, to play in the Blue Ridge Spectacular tournament. The Spectacular features ongoing choices of duplicate games that are stratified or bracketed to level the playing field for players with zero to ten thousand master points.

Over 600 players came to the Spectacular last year making it the fastest growing sectional tournament in the U.S.,” says Jane Champion, tournament chair. “We welcome all duplicate players and promise friendly competitive games. Pairs of contestants playing duplicate bridge, unlike social bridge, play identical series of deals and are scored according to the comparative points they earn for each deal.

The Western North Carolina Unit of the American Contract Bridge League is hosting the Spectacular. WNC has a vibrant, active duplicate bridge community which attracts many retirees. In fact, the Hendersonville Bridge Club is one of the top 100 bridge clubs in the nation. Located in the Whitmire Center on Lily Pond Road, the Club holds games six afternoons a week as well as classes for players of all levels (details at www.BridgeWebs/HendersonvilleBridge.com).

The complete Spectacular schedule, contact information and other details are available at www.BlueRidgeSpectacular.org. Duplicate players looking for a partner for the pair games or additional players to form a team for the Swiss games can contact one of the Partnership Co-Chairs listed on the Spectacular website to be connected with others looking for partners. Tournament Directors will conduct the games in compliance with ACBL rules and manage any conduct that interferes with enjoyment of the game play.

Free “W(h}ine and Cheese” receptions—for players to commiserate on their bad luck or bad cards—will be held Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and Friday at 5:30 p.m. compliments of St. Paul Mountain Vineyards. The Spectacular is also sponsored by Visit Hendersonville, NC; SanStone Health & Rehabilitation; Carolina Village; Gentiva and Always Best Care Senior Services.

Players interested in teaching bridge in their communities are invited to arrive the Monday before the Spectacular begins to meet Patty Tucker, Grand Life Master and President of the American Bridge Teachers Association. She will be accrediting instructors for her “Learn Bridge in A Day?”® class that’s earned rave reviews from more than 10,000 new and returning players on Monday, June 19, at the Broadmoor Links Clubhouse near the Asheville Airport (details at www.BlueRidgeSpectacular.org).
