Four local students announced as 2020 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Medalists

From the Asheville Art Museum:

The Asheville Art Museum is thrilled to share that four students who participated in the 2020 WNC Regional Scholastic Art Awards are 2020 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Medalists.

Twenty-four regional Gold Key winners and five regional American Visions nominees went on to the national competition with two winning Silver Medals and two winning Gold Medals. Congratulations to Silver Medalists Stacia Black of Enka High School and Sovah Woydak of Asheville High School, and Gold Medalists Juliana Maurer of Asheville High School and Isabel Inman of Asheville Christian Academy. Maurer also received the American Visions Medal, the highest regional honor, which is given to one artist from each region.

More than 110,000 students submitted nearly 320,000 works of art and writing to the 2020 Scholastic Awards. From these, only 3,000 works received a National Medal, which means these recipients’ works placed within the top 1% of all submissions.

“Our heartfelt congratulations go out to these talented young artists as well as the educators who have encouraged and inspired them along the way,” says Asheville Art Museum Executive Director Pamela L. Myers.

The Museum, with the assistance of its volunteer docents and support from the Asheville Area Section of the American Institute of Architects, has proudly sponsored the WNC Regional Scholastic Art Awards for 40 years. Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention recipients were shown in the 2020 WNC Regional Scholastic Art Awards exhibition at the Museum February 1–March 9. Gold Key recipients’ works can still be viewed here.
