Free financial planning offered for gay and lesbian couples in WNC

Gay and lesbian couples in Western North Carolina can take advantage of a free financial planning workshop on Feb. 4. The workshop will explore legal, tax, retirement and issuance issues. The event will be held in Brevard at Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County.

Encompass Advisors of Brevard will offer a free financial planning workshop for gay and lesbian couples living in WNC. The workshop will be held on Wednesday,
February 4 from 3 pm – 5 pm. This two-hour workshop will explore the legal, tax, retirement and insurance issues that must be addressed and resolved in financial planning for the well being of individuals and couples who are members of the LGBT community. Particular attention will be given to potential problems facing those living in North Carolina.

Topics will be identified and discussed and recommended solutions will be presented along with the documents required. Time will be allocated for personal discussion with professionals in each field. Topics Include:

· The implications of recent Federal & State Court Decisions

· Health care & Medicare

· Property Ownership Issues

· Purchasing & Titling Real Property

· Designating Beneficiaries

· Wills, Trusts & Transfers On Death (TOD)

· End-of-Life Planning & Health Care Directives

· Maximizing Social Security benefits for yourself & your partner/spouse

· IRAs, ROTHs, 401(k)s, Pension Plans & Spousal IRA’s

· Tax Planning, Federal & State Income Tax Deductions, Exemptions

· Life, Health & Disability Insurance

Leading this workshop is Jon Randolph Green, President of Encompass Advisors. He is an Attorney, Certified Financial Planner, a Certified Public Accountant, an AICPA Personal Financial Specialist and an Accredited Asset Management Specialist. He is a member of The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA), The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and The Personal Financial Planning section of the AICPA. Jon has more than 40 years of experience in finance and investments. He was a member of the faculty at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University, Perdue University and the University of Colorado, where he taught accounting and finance.
