Antarctica Travelogue with Laura Bochner at Asheville Wild Birds Unlimited Store on April 7 @ 3 PM
In December 2012, Laura Bochner had the opportunity to travel to Antarctica with Michigan State University and One Ocean Expeditions. Aboard an ice-strengthened former Russian research vessel, Laura ventured from the tip of South America to the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and then on to the Falkland Islands. Over the course of three weeks, she saw eight species of penguin, experienced multiple penguin colonies, and fell in love with albatrosses. There were many birds to watch, but there was other wildlife, too (whales! seals! sea lions! dolphins! and big ice. Come share photos and stories from Laura’s trip to the coldest, highest, driest, windiest, most remote continent on Earth at Laura’s travelogue presentation.
Laura is a resident of Asheville and works at the Colburn Earth Science Museum downtown. Originally from Pennsylvania, she studied Geology at Lafayette College. The chance to travel to amazing places and learn in the field first attracted her to the geosciences, and her studies have taken her from the national parks of the desert southwest to Wyoming to Hawaii to Ireland. If she’s not thinking about ways to make learning science engaging and fun for children, you can find Laura lacing up her hiking boots or slipping on her clogging shoes.
