Girls on the Run encouraging schools to start submitting applications

Press release from Girls on the Run:

As Girls on the Run® of Western North Carolina gears up for their Fall 2013 season, they are asking elementary and middle schools, as well as other interested organizations, in Buncombe, Henderson and 12 other counties in their service area to start submitting site applications now. This will be the 11th year the non-profit has been serving girls across WNC.

“We are so excited to see how the program has been growing with each year,” states GOTR of WNC’s Executive Director, Amy Renigar. She adds, “Last year, with the help and dedication of over 175 coaches and assistant coaches, we were able to make a positive impact in the lives of over 1,200 participating girls.”

Girls on the Run is a non-profit prevention program for girls in 3rd-8th grades, which encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. The Girls on the Run curricula address all aspects of girls’ development – their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being with such topics as self-esteem, healthy lifestyle habits, setting goals, teamwork, keeping promises and good communication skills. The program also prepares the girls to participate in a 5K (3.1 mile) run at the end of the 12-week session, 24-lesson program.

The Girls on the Run Fall session begins the week of September 9th and runs through the week of December 2nd. “We are so grateful for the continued support of local schools and other organizations that provide our program and to the teachers, faculty and parents who volunteer to help grow strong girls. We would love to expand our partnerships with new sites in the community this fall, because it enables us to reach even more girls with our life-changing program,” says Renigar.

New sites interested in submitting an application to provide the program should contact Amy Renigar by phone at 828-713-4290 or by email at amy.renigar@girlsontherun.org. For more information about becoming a program site, visit www.gotrwnc.org. The deadline to submit site applications is August 5, 2013.
