Volunteers in Asheville GreenWorks’ Green Adventure Day had quite the cleanup at Smith Mill Creek last Saturday. By the end of the day they had removed 72 tires and a literal truckload of scrap metal from the creek. Additional volunteer efforts included potting over 300 trees for a later planting and picking up litter along the roadside.

Press announcement

On Saturday, March 21, 67 volunteers, including 13 Boy Scouts, came from near and far to participate in Green Adventure Day – a collaboration between the Adventure Center of Asheville and Asheville GreenWorks  to combine service with fun.  Volunteers cleaned up a section of Smith Mill Creek, removing 72 tires, collecting a dump truck-full of scrap metal and filling a 40 cubic yard dumpster with trash.  Another set of volunteers potted 300 trees to ready them for planting on public land throughout Asheville and around Buncombe County. A group of Boy Scouts and their leaders picked up litter along a 1-mile stretch of road.  While volunteers were offered a 50 percent discount on Zipline and climbing activities at the Adventure Center, many did not take advantage of the offer, choosing to Get Dirty for a Good Cause out of the goodness of their hearts.

GreenWorks’ next volunteer event will be an orchard planting on Saturday, April 11 at Hillcrest Apartments. Visit www.ashevillegreenworks.org  or call 828-254-1776 for more information.
