Hiawassee Street temporarily repaved, roadway has reopened

Press release from the City of Asheville:

The City of Asheville announces Hiawassee Street between Rankin Avenue and North Lexington Avenue, has been temporarily repaved, restoring smoother access for motorists and pedestrians. This work was necessary in the interim while planning continues for a permanent upgrade to the utility and stormwater systems.

City staff are actively coordinating with utility partners to finalize designs and ensure infrastructure improvements align with the upgraded stormwater system previously identified. A future road closure will be necessary for permanent stormwater construction, anticipated in Winter 2026.

“We appreciate the community’s patience as we work toward long-term improvements,” said Derek Wainscott, Stormwater Division Manager. “This temporary repaving ensures safe and accessible travel while we continue planning the next phase of utility coordination and infrastructure upgrades.”

The City will provide updates on future construction timelines as they become available on the project page here.
