Hickory church wins national Kraft Cheese, TerraCycle recycling contest

From a press release:

Hickory Church of Christ is the national winner of cash and prizes in a contest run by Kraft Cheese and recycling pioneer TerraCycle. The Kraft Barbecue Bash contest gave entrants a chance to win by recycling the most used cheese wrappers June 1-July 31. Hickory Church of Christ sent in 9,000 wrappers as part of The Cheese Packaging Brigade, TerraCycle’s nationwide collection program to keep cheese wrappers from going to landfills while earning money for charity at the same time.

As the top collector in the contest, the Hickory Church of Christ won a $2,500 donation it will use for its food pantry, $2,500 to hold a “barbecue bash,” a recycled picnic table made using cheese packaging, barbecue bash giveaways and prizes, and two grills, one for the church to keep and one to raffle at the picnic. The church is holding its celebration “bash” Friday, September 6 from 5-9 p.m. The community is invited to attend. Residents need to RSVP by signing up at the church or emailing tperkins@hickorychurch.org.

“Our members were collecting from co-workers and neighbors and a local pizza restaurant saved all their cheese bags so we could try to win the contest,” said Hickory Church of Christ Brigade leader Tracie Perkins. “We are excited to host this great picnic Kraft is providing for us and want to share it with as many people as we can.”

TerraCycle runs free collection programs for almost 50 kinds of non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle waste. Since 2007, the company has kept more than 2.5 billion pieces of trash from going to the landfill, and with its partners, paid more than $7 million to charity through the Brigade programs.
