High school students and community leaders discuss ethics in justice

Press release from WNC Junior Achievement:

On Tuesday April 12th at the Crowne Plaza Resort and Spa in Asheville, high school students from across the region (Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, Polk) with gather together with business leaders from the community in a roundtable style discussion on the topic of Ethics in Justice. This is the 12th Annual event of its kind bringing together those who shape our community and our leaders of tomorrow. Thirty-seven local businesses are sponsoring this event because they recognize the importance in preparing youth for life after high school and growing the talent pool of WNC’s next generation.

Keynote speaker, Federal Prosecutor Jill Westmoreland Rose, will address the crowd of 500 on the topic of Ethics and the role it plays in the realm of justice and the choices faced by those through the personal decision making process. In order to attend, students were required to submit an essay addressing one of three ethical topics. This year the topics included: the legalization of recreational marijuana in North Carolina, the rise in bullying and school violence, and the increasing rate by which youth are incarcerated. Students were charged with referencing their own internal ethical beliefs along with external facts and resources. The top essay winner in each category, as judged by the editors of the Asheville Citizen-Times, will be awarded a Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet donated by Encore Technology Group.

Junior Achievement of Western North Carolina has served over 100,000 youth in fifteen counties over the past 40 years through programming in Financial Literacy, Workforce Readiness, and Entrepreneurship. Businesses that support Junior Achievement realize how critical it is to prepare our high school students with the soft skills they need to secure employment. Programs are available in all WNC counties and are taught by volunteers directly in the classroom.
