Installation and performance “The People’s Cloth Trade Show” at CCCD, July 14-25

Carole Frances Lung presents installation and performance “The People’s Cloth Trade Show” at the Center for Craft, Creativity and Design. The two week residency also includes workshops, an artist talk and a look at textile tourists. Events tun Tuesday, July 14-Saturday, July 25.

Frau Fiber is in residence:
July 14 – 25, Tue – Sat, 1 – 5 pm
Artist, activist and scholar Carole Frances Lung will perform her alter ego Frau Fiber, in The People’s Cloth Trade Show. Playing off of a “trade show” format, this installation and performance work creates an approachable, immersive environment for visitors to learn about North Carolina textile manufacturing, history, production methods, and global context.

The People’s Cloth Trade Show is organized by Institute 4 Labor Generosity Workers & Uniforms, Frau Fiber’s organization for suppressing unethical global fast fashion.

Schedule of Events

• Try Your Hand at the Leisure Time for Production Hall with Frau Fiber
Tue – Sat, July 14 – 25, 1 – 5 pm

Participants will be invited to re-create, by hand, garments and textile products related to companies in North Carolina with instruction by Frau Fiber. All skill levels are welcome. Materials will be provided. For workshop descriptions and dates, please visit the CCCD website.

• Soft Guerrilla Textile Activism: The Chronicles of Frau Fiber (Artist Talk)
Thursday, July 16, 6:30 pm

This talk, presented by Frau Fiber’s biographer Carole Frances Lung, will showcase and contextualize Frau Fiber’s motivation for global instigations about apparel and textile manufacturing, her labor politics, and performative resistance to fast fashion. A reception will follow the discussion.

• Weaver’s Knot Workshop with Barry Conner
Friday, July 17, 4 – 5 pm

Barry G. Conner, weaving technician at The Oriole Mill and overhauler with 23 years textile production experience in North Carolina, will be demonstrating the weaver’s knot technique and discussing the textile industry and its changes with Frau Fiber.

• Textile Tourism with Frau Fiber

Participants are invited to join Frau Fiber for an insider’s look at two local textile production facilities in Western North Carolina: Echoview Mill (Jupiter, NC) , The Oriole Mill (Hendersonville, NC), and Valdese Weavers (Valdese, NC).

• Talk Labor and Production with Frau Fiber and NC Factory Owners
Friday, July 24, 5 – 8 pm

Frau Fiber will host a conversation with North Carolina factory owners about the textile industry, its changes, and future. A reception will follow the discussion.
