Jackson County NAACP to hold virtual MLK event Jan. 18

Press release from the Jackson County NAACP:

The MLK march and rally scheduled for Monday, Jan. 18, will not be held live, but virtually.  The Jackson County NC chapter of the NAACP, along with Reconcile Sylva, Down Home NC, Change NC and Indivisible Common Ground WNC will be sponsoring this event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Zoom event will start at 2:00 p.m. and will be hosted by Dr. Enrique Gomez, outgoing president of the Jackson County Branch of the NAACP and Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy at WCU, and Dr. Dana Murray Patterson, incoming NAACP president and Director of Intercultural Affairs at WCU.
There will be a Land Acknowledgement by Sky Sampson, Director of the WCU Cherokee Center.  Speakers will include: Dr. David Walton, Assistant Professor of History & Director of the Global Black Studies Program at WCU; Dean Paulk, Assistant Director of Intercultural Affairs at WCU; Ricardo Nazario-Colon, Chief Diversity Officer at WCU’s Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity Programs; and Dr. Brandi Hinnant Crawford, Associate Professor in the College of Education and Allied Professions and Human Services at WCU.
