Juniper Bends Reading Series hosts poet Niina Pollari, Oct. 6

Brooklyn-based poet Niina Pollari reads from her poetry collection, Dead Horse, at Downtown Books & News Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Press release from event organizers:

Celebrated Brooklyn-based poet Niina Pollari will read from her debut collection of poetry, Dead Horse (Feb. 2015, Birds, LLC) in an event on Tuesday, October 6, at Downtown Books & News (67 N. Lexington Avenue in Asheville). Presented by the Juniper Bends Reading Series, this event—free and open to the public—begins at 7 p.m.

“These poems are so rhythmic you can almost ride them,” reviews Melissa Broder. “Moving through the daily deaths of the earth, the questions of what to hold together and what to let, Niina Pollari writes from a place where emotion meets bone, exploring what it means to be a blood container. You will see your own skull.”

Joyelle McSweeney remarks, “Niina Pollari’s poems unfold with a phrasal clarity I didn’t know I needed, and which disturbs me: ‘like an animal/enjoying the warm sunshine with blood in my mouth.’” Copies of Dead Horse will be available for purchase, and Niina will sign books after the event.

Joining Niina will be local authors Lockie Hunter, Caroline Wilson, Leah Shapiro, and Allison Jarrett. Lockie holds an MFA in fiction from Emerson College in Boston, and her words have appeared in publications including Slipstream, Brevity, Nerve, Gulf Stream Literary Magazine, The Baltimore Review, Main Street Rag, New Plains Review and Arts & Opinion. Caroline is a graduate of UNCA’s Women, Gender, and Sexuality studies program and is one half of the community reading series Juniper Bends, with Lockie Hunter. Leah is community editor for The Laurel Asheville magazine, and co-author of the zine Friends with PUNefits. Allison is a senior at Warren Wilson College where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English and Creative Writing with a concentration in poetry.
