Kit Cramer to appear on Carolina Business Review, will speak about tourism and economic development

Asheville Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Kit Cramer will appear as a guest on The Carolina Business Review, a weekly program that explores business in the Carolinas. The show features a panel whose members analyze the week’s business highlights, followed by a discussion with a special guest on how his or her business relates to the current economic picture in North and South Carolina. According to Cramer, the show was filmed last week.

As part of a four-person panel related to tourism and economic development, Cramer said she came away from the show feeling grateful.

“We are really fortunate in Asheville to have such a wonderful product to market,” she said. “Our whole strategy is to be who we are and play up our assets.”

And tourists and visitors have taken notice. One-third of all retail sales in Buncombe County come from the more than 3 million people who visit Asheville. Cramer explains, “That generates a combined $37 million, that goes directly to local government.”

Another talking point that came up during the show was the relationship between tourism and economic development. “It’s all about growing jobs, and we specifically talked about New Belgium. The fact that an unscientific Beer City, USA poll would put us on the map, but also bring Sierra Nevada to the region — it’s an interesting thing, the public relations value of so many of the listings that we get is huge,” she said.

The dialogue of the show will focus on how the state can capitalize on tourism as a catalyst for economic development, showing the return on investment for tourism marketing and economic impact of business and leisure travel.
