All are invited to volunteer at Lake Cleanup Day at Lake Junaluska, to be held Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. This annual community event will focus on clearing debris that has collected along the shorelines and entrance roadways.
The Junaluskans, working in conjunction with Lake Junaluska staff, organized the event. The Junaluskans are a volunteer organization of Junaluska residents and other persons who love Lake Junaluska. The group will provide coffee and light snacks for participants, as well as supplies such as garbage bags, litter pick-up sticks and gloves.
“With the drawn-down lake, we can gain access on foot to pockets of trash that are normally accessible only by boat,” said Lake Cleanup Day Project Coordinator Jim Pearson. “This equates to more than three miles of shoreline that need to be cleaned.”
Pearson noted that community efforts and teamwork are critical to the lake cleanup. “I encourage anyone who walks around the lake or who enjoys fishing along its banks to come out and help us pick up the trash,” he said.
Lake Junaluska is partnering on the cleanup with Haywood Waterways, a non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining and improving surface water quality in the Pigeon River Watershed of Haywood County.
Earthcare, a volunteer group of Junaluskans, will also be participating in the cleanup. The group focuses its efforts on projects that will enhance the beauty of Lake Junaluska and its surroundings and enrich the experience of its visitors.
All volunteers will be asked to sign-in upon arrival on March 7. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own equipment, such as gloves and litter grabbers, where possible. Helpers of all ages are welcome to be part of the cleanup, but adult chaperones should accompany youth.
The cleanup starts at 9 a.m. and volunteers will gather at 8:15 a.m. at the Kern Center (near the pool) to get organized. Organizers have scheduled a group photo for 8:50 a.m.
New this year, is the opportunity for groups of six or more volunteers to pre-register. Pre-registered groups can choose in advance where they want to work on cleanup day, then pick up their supplies and head off to work following the group photo. The pre-registration period is from Monday, March 2 through Thursday, March 5. To pre-register or find out more about the cleanup, contact Jim Pearson at 502-419-3035.
The event will go on rain or shine. All work will be done outside, so volunteers should dress accordingly for the weather and for potentially muddy conditions around the lake.
