Lake Junaluska to host a weekend of concerts

Press release from The Lake Junaluska Associates:

The Lake Junaluska Associates will host a weekend of music, including the Lake Junaluska Singers in their final concert of the summer on Friday, August 3, and acclaimed handbell choir The Raleigh Ringers on Saturday, August 4.

The weekend celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Lake Junaluska Associates, a fundraising and volunteer group at Lake Junaluska. Over the years, the organization has invested more than $3.5 million into Lake Junaluska. Everyone is invited to attend the two concerts.

The Lake Junaluska Singers will wrap up their summer season with the August 3 concert. Director Mary Huff said she is especially excited for this performance, entitled “A Musical Feast.” The concert will include classical choral music by women composers including Jocelyn Hagen, Diane Loomer, Eleanor Daley and Stephanie Martin, in addition to spirituals like “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.”

“For this concert we are going to have a wide variety of outstanding music—from beautiful arrangements by outstanding women composers to songs from American songwriter and performer James Taylor, who celebrates his 70th birthday this year,” said Huff. “Attendees should expect an evening that will make the heart leap with joy and leave them smiling from ear to ear.”

The Raleigh Ringers, who will perform August 4, are an internationally acclaimed, advanced community handbell choir that plays unique interpretations of sacred, secular and popular music. Their music includes famous rock ‘n’ roll tunes arranged just for handbells. Expect to hear an amazing variety of songs—everything from “Flight of the “Bumblebee” to “Dueling Banjos.”

“Since we are a ‘community-based’ group, not related to any particular church or school, we have had the opportunity to explore many different kinds of music,” said David Harris, director of the Raleigh Ringers. “We strive to reach the widest possible audience with the variety of music we play.”

The Lake Junaluska Associates gather at Lake Junaluska every August for fellowship, to discuss plans for the next year and to honor one special member with the Chief Junaluska Award. Concerts during Associates Weekend have become a great tradition, and the Lake Junaluska Associates invite the whole community to attend.

Each concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Stuart Auditorium. General admission tickets are available for $18 plus tax at the Bethea Welcome Center, online at www.lakejunaluska.com/concerts or by calling 800-965-9324.
