Laura Hope-Gill holds Writing Beyond Rape workshop, Aug. 20

PRESS RELEASE FROM EVENT ORGANIZERS:

Writing Beyond Rape: From Silence to Song
8/20/16 at Lenoir Rhyne from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm

Laura Hope-Gill, a North Carolina Arts Fellow and Director of Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative at Lenoir-Rhyne University, will present a day of writing, witness, and reflection for survivors of sexual abuse, all genders welcome.

Program Description:
Veterans of Foreign Wars have brick-and-mortar buildings dedicated to sharing their stories, where they can go and talk and tell and listen, key elements of recovery from PTSD. Rape survivors have no such buildings. And regardless of the nature of the trauma, and in order to heal from PTSD, we have to tell and build bridges that connect us back to the world. Writing is, in this way, our own brick-and-mortar building where we meet. Whether you are writing your rape narrative, a valuable document in itself, or are seeking to create a world beyond what has happened by using imagination and the music of words, this writing-to-heal session will bring your voice to new levels and give you the audience that will help you move through to the next level of recovery. The path, as you know, is infinite. Our words can carry us. Even if you have nothing to say, come join us and maybe some words will stir.
