Local doc gets board certified in sleep medicine

From the press release:

Asheville, North Carolina – February 25, 2012 Daniel Hey, MD, of Parkway Medical Group, has passed the certification exam and is now board certified in Sleep Medicine. Along with his practice in Family Medicine at Parkway Medical in Black Mountain, NC, Hey is the Medical Director of Asheville Sleep Center at Parkway Medical Group. Asheville Sleep Center offers diagnosis and treatment of the full range of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, circadian rhythm disorders, leg movement disorders, and REM sleep behavior disorders. The center features an on-site sleep lab for overnight studies, on-site sleep study interpretation, as well as on-site availability of CPAP equipment for the treatment of sleep apnea.

“I’m always pleased to see referred patients from other physicians in the community,” says Hey. “We can work together to improve a patient’s health — sleep medicine is simply another useful ‘tool in the toolbox’ for Family Practice physicians in patient diagnosis and treatment.”

“What I enjoy most about sleep medicine is being able to see a patient who’s being held back because of a sleep disorder, whose work or overall health is suffering because of poor sleep or daytime sleepiness or fatigue,” says Hey, “and then being able to see the difference in their quality of life after they’re treated. In particular, people with excessive daytime sleepiness or people with other conditions like diabetes, stroke, atrial fibrillation, or heart failure are at high risk for undiagnosed sleep apnea, which needs to be ruled out with a sleep study. Sleep medicine offers such demonstrable benefits and patients can quickly see improvement in their quality of life. I like being a part of that.”

Hey is also available for presentations to the Western North Carolina region on the latest in sleep research and treatment, as well as ways people can improve their sleep habits for deeper, more refreshing rest. Hey attended the University of Mississippi’s Medical School, completed his Family Practice residency in Lynchburg, VA and began practicing in 2000. He and his family moved to Black Mountain, NC to join Parkway Medical Group in 2008. Asheville Sleep Center was founded in 2011.

With offices in Asheville and Black Mountain, Parkway Medical Group offers a full range of family medicine services, including management of chronic disease, as well as diagnosis and treatment of acute illnesses in adults and children. Parkway features nine providers and an array of on-site diagnostic and testing services, including a comprehensive laboratory, in-house x-rays, DEXA scans, pulmonary function testing, EKGs, echocardiography, and ultrasounds.
