Local Quakers to hold fundraiser for children in Kenya

Press release

From Celo Friends Meeting

Celo Friends Meeting (Quakers) invites the Burnsville and surrounding community to join in a fun and engaging evening of food and live entertainment to benefit educational programs in Southern Kenya. The Celo Friends Meeting has a goal of raising $10,000 to support two Shepherd’s Schools serving around 100 children each, two literacy programs serving 20-25 people, and 16 scholarships for girls. The group has already secured a matching grant for the first $2500. Samburu girls face many obstacles to education, including lack of funds, early marriage and childbirth, and the need to support the family by helping tend to livestock. When Celo Meeting member Geeta McGahey visited the area in 2012, she met women who wanted to continue their education to be able to make the best informed choices for their families. Upon returning, Geeta was inspired to get her community involved in this effort.
