Mars Hill University announces MLK Day events

Mars Hill University has scheduled a full day of events to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 20, 2020. Classes are canceled for students, with a series of educational and service activities scheduled. The day’s events are coordinated by the university’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

This year’s events include:

8:30-9:30 a.m.: Community Conversations – The challenge of reevaluating MLK Day; Redway Dining Room of Pittman Dining Hall

10 a.m.-12.p.m.: Film and Discussions – “At the River I Stand” and “I Am Not Your Negro: James Baldwin & Race in America”; Day Hall, rooms 202, 204, 303, and 304

12:30-1:30 p.m.: Community Conversations – The challenge of reevaluating MLK Day; Redway Dining Room of Pittman Dining Hall

2-4 p.m.: Film and Discussions – “At the River I Stand” and “I Am Not Your Negro: James Baldwin & Race in America”; Day Hall, rooms 202, 204, 303, and 304

2-5 p.m.: Bailey Mountain Ascent – reflection on Dr. King’s “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech; meet at Bentley Fellowship Hall to carpool to the trailhead

4-5:30 p.m.: Community Service Project – students will collect and package food donations for ABIPA (Asheville Buncombe Institute of Parity Achievement) and toiletry donations for Hayood Street Congregation and local nursing homes; Bentley Fellowship Hall

6 p.m.: MLK Peace Candlelight Vigil – featuring a world premiere performance of African-American composer Valerie Coleman’s “Amazonia” by music professors Misty Theisen on flute and Brad Curtioff on piano; Upper Quad and Owen Theatre

7 p.m.: MLK Trivia; Ponder Atrium of Ferguson Math & Science Center
