MetroWines hosts “Reds of Ed.” benefit Feb. 14

REDs for ED Benefit

Please join us for “REDs for ED,” a benefit to support public schools in North Carolina at MetroWines on Sunday, February 14th from 3 p.m. to 5p.m. Parking is free, easy and close. $25 (plus tax). Proceeds of the event go to support advocacy for public education and are tax deductible. You must buy your ticket in advance. Call MetroWines at 828-575-9525.

Public Schools First NC is a statewide, nonpartisan organization focused solely on public education issues. We collaborate with teachers, parents, business and civic leaders, students and communities across North Carolina in support of an effective public education system that will prepare each child for life.

Strong public schools are critical for growing our economy and maintaining the vitality of our communities. Our mission is to educate and inform North Carolinians about critical issues that impact our schools, our teachers, and students and to engage all stakeholders in supporting a quality public education system.

“Public Schools First NC needs you to lend your voices to the cause of public education.  Your financial support allows Public Schools First NC to do the important work of educating the citizens of North Carolina about the value of public schools, as well as the state-level policy and funding decisions that have been threatening them,” says Joanna Best, the event organizer.

The Asheville School of Wine (ashevilleschoolofwine.com) will pour and discuss four REDs to support the REDs for ED mission:

Alto Sios 2010

A rich Spanish wine in the style of a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.  From Coster del Segre, a relatively unknown region of Spain, is this blend of Syrah, Tempranillo and Garnacha. Bold and powerful with exotic spices and rich, jammy fruit. Aged five years, this wine is at its peak.

Chateau Monestier LaTour Bergerac Rouge 2012

This classic Bordeaux blend is made by someone who broke through two Bordeaux barriers. Michelle D’Aprix is the from the only American, woman winemaker working in Bordeaux!

Merlot based, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, this wine is sure to please your palette whether you prefer Bordeaux or California! Flavors of blackberry, smoke, plum, leather and red cherry. From one of the best recent vintages.

Maria Mora Reserva 2013

Portugal has been making fine wine for hundreds of years, but only recently have they begun exporting their best dry table wines to the United States. This is one of the best examples of premium red coming from Portugal today.  Rich, deep, with an underlying complexity in the finish.

This is a blend of Portugal’s national grape, Touriga Nacional, blended with Syrah and Alicante Bouschet. Big and bold, with black pepper and spice. This wine sells for $36 in New York, but costs far less here because the importer lives in Asheville!

Paitin Barbera 2013

This wine is made from vineyards that predate the Renaissance.  And it is likely that Caravaggio enjoyed this wine himself. Barbera is the “everyday” wine of Italy’s Piedmont, but is capable of great complexity and beauty. Medium bodied, crisp and earthy, with flavors of cranberry, sour cherry and dusty strawberries.  This wine is anything but “everyday.”
