Press release from Mission Health

Mission Health’s Transylvania Regional Hospital and McDowell Hospital Nationally Recognized for Exceptional Patient Care by Prestigious Health Care List

Asheville, N.C. (Oct. 30, 2013) – In national quality rankings that were released today by the leading accreditor of American healthcare organizations, two Mission Health hospitals have been recognized for exceptional performance. For the third year in a row Transylvania Regional Hospital has been named one of the nation’s top performers on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, and this year, McDowell Hospital joins this prestigious list.

“I congratulate all of our caregivers, physicians, management and Board members at Transylvania Regional Hospital and McDowell Hospital for their part in achieving this important national recognition,” said Ronald A. Paulus, MD, president and CEO of Mission Health. “At Mission Health, we pursue our BIG(GER) Aim: to get each patient to the desired outcome, first without harm, also without waste and with an exceptional experience for the patient and family. This recognition is validation of our ongoing progress and the quality work that we are doing on behalf of the patients that we are so privileged to serve in our communities.”

These two Mission Health hospitals join others earning the distinction of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance. McDowell Hospital was recognized for its achievement on the following measure sets: Heart Failure, Pneumonia and Surgical Care. Transylvania Regional Hospital earned the national recognition for both pneumonia care and surgical care.

The Joint Commission recognizes facilities based on their performance on quality data reported on evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for patients with certain medical conditions.

“We are honored to be named to the list of The Joint Commission’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures for the third year in a row and to be a national leader in providing quality patient care,” said Bob Bednarek, president and CEO of Transylvania Regional Hospital.

To be named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures, facilities must:

1) achieve cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures;

2) achieve performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure where there are at least 30 denominator cases; and

3) have at least one core measure set that has a composite rate of 95 percent of above, and within that measure set all applicable individual measures have a performance rate of 95 percent or above. Each accountability measure represents an evidence-based practice – examples include giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients, giving antibiotics one hour before surgery, or providing a home management plan of care for children with asthma.

“McDowell Hospital is committed to caring for our community and ensuring that we provide our patients with excellent care” said Lynn Boggs, Senior Vice President of System Operations, Mission Health and CEO, McDowell Hospital. “McDowell Hospital is honored to receive the distinction of being a Joint Commission Top Performer on Key Quality Measures.” In addition to being included in today’s release of The Joint Commission’s “Improving America’s Hospitals” annual report, McDowell Hospital will be recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check website (www.qualitycheck.org). The Top Performer program will be featured in the December issues of The Joint Commission Perspectives and The Source.

“Transylvania Regional Hospital, McDowell Hospital and all the Top Performer hospitals have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to quality improvement and they should be proud of their achievement,” said Mark R. Chassin, MD, FACP, MPP, MPH, president and chief executive officer, The Joint Commission. “We have much to celebrate this year. Nearly half of our accredited hospitals have attained the Top Performer distinction. This truly shows that we are approaching a tipping point in hospital quality performance that will directly contribute to better health outcomes for patients.”
