Press release from the Mountain Sports Festival:
To celebrate all the good the Mountain Sports Festival has done for the community and local non-profits over the past 19 years, we are throwing one final fundraising event!
The party will take place at the Salvage Station on Friday May 3, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will include music by local favorites, SupaTight and The Get Right Band, interspersed with history and stories about the Mountain Sports Festival.
The WNC Disc Golf Association, which has been with the festival since year one, will be putting on an exhibition. There will also be a raffle which includes a Bic Sup Ace-Tec Cross 11’0 stand up paddle board valued at $999 donated by French Broad Outfitters and more!
Entry is free but small donations from $5 to $25 are appreciated. All proceeds will benefit both the Woodfin Wave (via RiverLink) and Streets to Peaks, a Maybin Mission program powered by Camp Grier. The Streets to Peaks program provides enriching outdoor experiences to youth with limited access to wilderness adventures. Through exciting challenges like rock climbing and whitewater paddling, program participants ages 11-18 learn to overcome obstacles, set long term goals and imagine a future with endless possibilities.
About the Mountain Sports Festival:
In late 1999 and into 2000 Stuart Cowles and a group of really engaged community supporters in the local outdoor industry set out to create an event where athletes, novice participants, sales reps, not-for-profit organizations, and retailers could all get together and share their knowledge of their chosen sport or product. The idea was to engage our community around the amazing outdoor offerings and activities that are found in our region and support a common culture of participation with the benefit of growth for all. With the common understanding that “All ships rise with rising tides” … they created the Mountain Sports Festival where everyone worked together to promote these core values.
The festival thrived for 18 years as a nonprofit event, free to the public. It was committed to presenting a well-balanced series of events and entertainment that encouraged participation by people of all ages. The Mountain Sports Festival was organized by a volunteer group of community oriented citizens. The Mountain Sports Festival’s final year was 2018.
