Muddy Roots Festival announced for 2014

In this world today you’d be forgiven for thinking of roots music as the homogenized overalls-and-handclaps folk singing of Hollywood dilettantes, but that’s certainly not the vision of the folks at Muddy Roots Music Festival. Their idea of roots music is music torn from the groundsoil of American traditions; ripped out kicking and screaming and played by artists whose only mission is to get this music into the hearts and minds of real people.

That’s why the lineup for Muddy Roots Festival 2014 (August 29-31 2014, Cookeville, TN), which was just announced, is so diverse. Their vision of roots music puts grunge godfathers Mudhoney together with vintage songster Pokey Lafarge, rockabilly revivalists The Blasters together with garage punk legends The Sonics and old-school punks The Weirdos. Muddy Roots’ respect for actual roots music of course extends to the elders of the tradition, here represented by the great country singer Bobby Bare. And of special note this year, pioneering alt-country band Th Legendary Shack Shakers is reuniting for ONE festival this year, and that festival is Muddy Roots. That’s because folks like the Shack Shakers know there’s no better festival to represent the intense fire of American roots music.
