NC MedAssist Mobile Free Pharmacy comes to Brevard on May 23

Press release from NC MedAssist:

NC MedAssist will hold a Mobile Free Pharmacy Event in Brevard, NC on Thursday, May 23.  The event, which is in collaboration with Lake Toxaway Charities, is open to any individual or family needing over-the-counter medications.  The event will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Brevard College (One Brevard College Drive, Brevard, NC 28712). Identification is not required to participate, but individuals must be at least 18 years of age.

“We are looking forward to bringing the NC MedAssist Mobile Free Pharmacy to Transylvania County,” said Colin Kirkman, United Way TRAIN Specialist. “The Mobile Free Pharmacy event is an opportunity for us to make an impact on the health and wellness of the community. We look forward to helping provide health resources and education to individuals and families in this community.”

Individuals will receive up to eight (8) OTC items for their family/home.  Information will also be available on enrolling in the NC MedAssist Free Pharmacy Program.  NC MedAssist’s overall goal is to help ease the burden for those who are making the choice between buying food or purchasing medication.

“NC MedAssist is excited to host a Mobile Free Pharmacy event in Transylvania County,” stated NC MedAssist CEO Lori Giang. “Together with our community partners, we are bringing free over-the-counter medications, like Tylenol and Band-Aids, to area residents. No one should ever go without medicine, and the Mobile Free Pharmacy Program enables us to reach those who are unaware of our free resources.”

Along with free medicine, free health screenings will be available. Blue Ridge Community Health Center will check blood pressure and/or glucose; Transylvania Regional Hospital will offer behavioral health screenings and Healthy Lifestyle will do nutritional screenings and share diabetes/cardiac information.

To ensure the event runs smoothly and that all participants (up to 800 at times) are served before the doors close, many volunteers are needed. NC MedAssist is partnering with Lake Toxaway Charities and other safety-net organizations to recruit community members to serve in volunteer roles such as pharmacy consultation, client personal shoppers, and sorters. If you would like to volunteer, please visit www.medassist.org to sign up.

There are currently over 4,500 people in Transylvania County that live below the Federal Poverty Level and do not qualify for insurance through the Affordable Care Act.  Last fiscal year, NC MedAssist dispensed over $63.5 million in free prescription medication and $5 million in over-the-counter medication statewide.
