On Saturday, December 9 the NC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce held the first Latino Entrepreneur Award Celebration. The event commemorated the growth of the chamber and the accomplishments of chamber members. In the celebration four Latino leaders were recognized for their outstanding achievements as entrepreneurs in the Triangle area.
Hilda Gurdian, Publisher of La Noticia, The Spanish-Language Newspaper received the award as Latina Entrepreneur of the Year. Gurdian is publisher of three editions: La Noticia Charlotte, La Noticia Asheville and La Noticia Raleigh.
Gurdian is also President and CEO of La Noticia Foundation, a nonprofit organization that awards a minimum of four scholarships in the amount of $2,500 to outstanding Latino students to go to college.
As a leading Spanish-language newspaper in North Carolina, La Noticia has become the reliable source of local, state and national news and information for the Latino community every week. In Raleigh and its surroundings the impact has been remarkable and the growth continues as La Noticia increases readership. La Noticia Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill area has a circulation of 26,000 copies each week and a readership of more than 100,000. It covers 21 cities and eight counties in the area.
La Noticia Asheville has a circulation of 6,000 copies every week and more than 25,000 readers. We cover 19 cities in 9 counties.
La Noticia Charlotte has a circulation of 26,000 copies each week and a readership of more than 100,000. It covers 27 cities in nine counties.
“We are honored to have received this recognition from the Leadership of the NC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. It is a motivation to continue working hard to provide the Latino community in the area with their best source of local and national news and information and to serve as a communication bridge between the Latino community and the Triangle community at large.” said Gurdian.
At the gala, Irene Caicedo Gonzalez, President of NC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, explained the economic benefits that Latinos businesses bring to the community and how the chamber encourages and supports their growth.
From Washington, D.C the President and CEO of the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Javier Palomarez attended the gala to be the keynote speaker. USHCC is the leading advocate for nearly 3 million Latino owned businesses and over 200 local Latino chambers throughout the country.
“We work hard to protect and support our entrepreneurs so they can have a fair chance in the market,” Palomarez said.
Other winners are:
• Marco and Ana Maria Roldan, owners of El Mandado Supermarket received the Outstanding Business of the Year award.
• Juan Carlos Lopez, owner of La Carreta Mexican Restaurant received the NCHCC New Latino Business of the Year award.
• Willy Stewart, CEO and founder of Stewart Inc. received the Latino Entrepreneur of the Year award.
