New Belgium announces local transport routes, schedules for brewing tanks

MEDIA ALERT: New Belgium Brewhouse Vessels Arrive

This is the latest information available from the transportation company hired by our Brewhouse vessel builders to deliver the vessels to 91 Craven Street. The logistics around loading and transporting the vessels will impact arrival times and dates. We will release additional information as it becomes available.

WHY: New Belgium Brewing is receiving brewing vessels for its east coast brewery in Asheville, NC.

WHAT: Rolling vehicle and pedestrian traffic delays along Smokey Park Highway and Haywood Road to Craven Street should be expected the second week in January, as New Belgium brewhouse vessels arrive to 91 Craven Street in West Asheville.

New Belgium’s 200 hectoliter brewhouse system departed from GEA Brewery Systems (GEA) in Kitzingen, Germany in mid-November and arrived to the NC State Ports Authority in Wilmington, NC in mid-December. All vessels will arrive to the Craven Street site by January 10. Through the month of January, GEA will be installing brewhouse vessels and tanks with a 300 ton crane.

WHEN and WHERE: See map below. There are three oversized brewhouse vessel deliveries requiring rolling road closures, delays, police escorts and special routing by NC Department of Transportation.

  •   Wednesday, January 7, 2015, before noon – The whirlpool vessel arrival will require rolling delays from I-40 to NC 191 to I-240 to Exit 2 to Hanover Street to Haywood Road to 91 Craven Street (red arrows). NC DOT restricts this load to daylight hours Monday through Friday.
  •   Thursday, January 8, 2015, before noon – The hot water tank will travel I-40W to exit 47 to US 74W to exit 44 to US 19/Smokey Park Highway to US19 Bus/Haywood Road to 91 Craven Street (green arrows). NC DOT restricts this load to daylight hours Monday through Friday.
  •   Sunday, January 4, 2015 OR Saturday, January 10 before noon – The largest of the vessels, the lauter tun, will travel I-40W to exit 47 to US 74W to exit 44 to US 19/Smokey Park Highway to US19 Bus/Haywood Road to 91 Craven Street (green arrows). NC DOT authorizes oversized load transport between sunrise and noon on Saturdays and Sundays in Buncombe County.

o The exact arrival date is determined as a result of real time transport process, including pace along the route from Wilmington, and will be confirmed and shared by the afternoon of Saturday, January 3 on www.NewBelgium.com/AshevilleBrewery.
