West Asheville – January 3, 2014 – The amazing artisan sandwiches that all of Asheville loved are making a comeback at Nona Mia Italian Kitchen, located at 1050 Haywood in the vibrant West Asheville corridor. A new lunch menu will feature an array of sandwiches, from new twists on old favorites to brand new creations.
Chef Peter Affatato creates each of these masterpieces from the finest ingredients. Starting on January 13, the dining room will open for counter service only from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and in addition to our fantastic sandwiches, we will be featuring pizzas, soups, and salads. The menu isn’t finalized yet, but we do know some of what’s going to be on it: for instance, house-roasted meats on house-baked bread, classic combinations like sausage and peppers, club sandwiches featuring our own house-cured bacon, our version of a New Orleans muffaletta, and vegetarian offerings such as radically handmade falafel (starting by grinding the chickpeas ourselves) and eggplant rapini. Nona Mia Italian Kitchen is the latest brainchild of chef Peter Affatato, who helped develop other well-known Asheville restaurants such as Savoy, as well as the original 28806 Deli, Bakery & Caterers.

Nona Mia, meaning “my grandmother,” takes its inspiration from the Italian-American cuisine developed by generations of immigrants, and practiced in the kitchens around and in which Peter grew up.
The Italian-American tradition in food weds the centuries-old genius of Old-World cuisine with New-World ingredients and modern panache, creating what Peter terms “Italian-American soul food.” Unique, Sicilian-style pizza and artisan sandwiches share pride of place with classics like Fettucini Alfredo, Lasagne, Chicken Piccata, and Nona’s Penne with Sunday Gravy.
