Half Price Juvenile and Young Adult Book Sale at the Oakley Library in November

The Oakley/South Asheville has a Perpetual Book sale in the lobby of the library. In November, all of the Juvenile and Young Adult fiction books will be half price. It will be fifty cents for hardback books, and 25 cents for paperback books. Come stock your shelves and help the library at the same time. The Holidays are drawing near, and the Fairview Library needs your help with a very special event. The Friends of the Fairview Library are sponsoring a Giving Tree Project. This project will send Fairview Elementary School children home at Christmas break with books to keep. With your help, we can be sure these children have something special to make their holidays bright. To participate, visit the Fairview Library and select a gift card with pertinent information about a child (gender, grade/reading level). Then, purchase a book or books ($10 minimum total retail value) and return it unwrapped to the Fairview Library by December 7th. Or, you can make a $10 donation to the Friends of the Fairview Library, and we will do the shopping for you. Thank you so much for helping make this project a success!! Information Sessions on the Affordable Care Act at the Library

The Council on Aging of Buncombe County will present an informational program on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) at several libraries in the month of November. The event will provide an overview of the ACA the federally funded marketplace in North Carolina and review the information needed to apply for coverage and a subsidy. There will be a question and answer session after the presentation.

25 Cent Sale at Pack Library

The Friends of the Library will be having a used book sale on Friday, November 1 from 10:30am-3pm. There will be bargain books for 25 cents in the hallway outside of the library and all boxes of books will be $2 a box.

Science Fiction Book Discussions at Pack Library: Brave New World

Pack Memorial Library’s science fiction reading and discussion series “Imagining the Future: Scientific Revelations in Fiction” continues in November. By studying classic science fiction novels, readers will be able to explore differing attitudes toward science and reflect on predictions which have sometimes turned out to be strikingly accurate. Guest humanities professors from UNC-Asheville and Appalachian State will lead the discussions.

This book discussion series is free and open to the public, but registration is required and a limited number of books are available. Pack Library will loan the books at no charge. The Special Effects of Hitchcock at Pack Library

On Thursday, November 7 at 6pm Pack Memorial Library will present “The Special Effects of Hitchcock.” Host Peter Loewer will show film excerpts and explore the cinematic magic of Alfred Hitchcock, director of more than 50 feature films in a career spanning six decades.

Join us as we discuss Hitchcock’s pioneering film techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genres. We’ll be screening film clips from such Hitchcock classics as Saboteur, Spellbound, Foreign Correspondent, and Rebecca.

West Asheville Library: Crisis in Fukushima

On Thursday, November 7 at 7pm at the West Asheville Library, UNC Asheville professor Dot Sulock will discuss the April 2011 nuclear plant meltdown at Fukushima, Japan. Ms. Sulock will detail the damage the reactor sustained from the earthquake and tidal wave, and ongoing efforts to deal with the ensuing melt-down of the site’s nuclear reactors, including the extreme challenge of removing 400 tons of spent fuel beneath the plant. Historic Preservation Planning Workshop at Pack Library

What is the future for Historic Preservation in Asheville? What parts of our historic built environment can benefit from future efforts? Preservation is progress, preservation is planning. Due to a grant from the Department of Cultural Resources and funding from generous private sources, the City of Asheville will be undertaking the production of a comprehensive preservation plan for Asheville and Buncombe County. The process will begin this November and be completed in June of 2014.

Public participation in the creation of the plan will be key to a successful result. The Preservation Society invites the public to an introduction to the planning process to learn how you can play a key role in this important effort for the future of preservation. If historic preservation is important to you, we urge you to attend!

An Evening of Jazz at Pack Library

Pack Memorial Library will host a free jazz concert at 6pm on Thursday, November 21. Vocalist Jesse Earl Junior will be accompanied by pianist Michael Jefry Stevens in a duet performance of live jazz.

Michael Jefry Stevens is an internationally-known jazz pianist and composer. Over the past 40 years he’s released more than 80 CDs and continues to perform and conduct workshops in North America, Latin America, and Europe. Jesse Earl Junior is a multi-faceted singer with roots in Gospel, Jazz, and the Blues with a bit of R&B thrown in for good measure. After stints in the jazz venues of New York and his native Milwaukee, he has settled in Asheville and continues to sing the music he loves.
