Pan Harmonia announces concert with the Opal String Quartet, Oct. 24

Pan Harmonia presents the Opal String Quartet

Friday, October 24 at 7:30 PM in the intimate St. Mary’s Episcopal Church at 337 Charlotte in North Asheville.

The Opal String Quartet will lend their passionate and incisive style to romantic masterpieces by Brahms and Bloch, as well as two brand new compositions by local composer Tim Winter of Saluda. Winter’s works are jazzy, lush, intriguing, and highly listenable, and create the perfect counterpoint for the deep sonorities of Johannes Brahms’ “C Minor String Quartet” and the plaintive “Prelude” of Ernest Bloch.

Guest violinist Seth Gangwer, a stunning multi-genre artist who just recently moved to WNC by way of Nashville, will join three of the founding members of the quartet, violinist Ginger Kowal, an Asheville native and long-time wunderkind, Kara Poorbaugh, Asheville Symphony Principal Violist of the and Franklin Keel, Acting Principal Cellist of the ASO.

The Opal String Quartet serves as artists-in-residence for the educational outreach programs of the Asheville Chamber Music Series and the Asheville Symphony Guild, and has performed at universities, galleries, bars, schools, and concert series across WNC and surrounding areas. This is the quartet’s second appearance on Pan Harmonia’s series. Known by audiences for its fresh, fiery, intense music-making, Opal’s mission is to create vital performances of traditional masterworks, perform innovative new repertoire for the string quartet, and bring the magic of chamber music to diverse audiences.

This program will be repeated on Oct 25 and 26 in other areas. Check Opal String Quartet’s Facebook page for details.

Tickets: $16.50 in advance at www.pan-harmonia.org/shop or $22 at the door / $5 for Students
