Press release from Parker Sloan for Buncombe:

Parker Sloan announced today that he is running for Buncombe County Commission in District Three. Parker, 34, is a North Carolina native who lives in Candler with his wife Maia, an elementary school teacher, and their one-year-old son, Austin.

“I’m running for County Commission because I want to translate my knowledge of policy and ongoing local government experience, and put that to work for the people of Buncombe County. My priorities are preserving and protecting the French Broad River and its tributaries, requiring the creation of affordable housing for low and moderate income households, diversifying our economy to raise wages, and funding new and reliable transportation infrastructure. It’s clear Buncombe County is working for tourists, but many across our community are being left behind,” says Sloan.

Parker has served as a member of Buncombe County Planning Board since 2014. His responsibilities as a voting member of the board put him face-to-face with our development issues. and residents experiencing the impacts and is a core reason he is running for County Commissioner.

He also wants to draw attention to the issues of gun violence, teacher pay and climate change, which impact the daily lives of every citizen in our community and should be the responsibility of every level of government to address. Parker now works at a national utility scale solar energy company here in Asheville where he works with state & local governments across the South in an effort to move our nation away from fossil fuels and toward a 21st century clean energy economy. While working full-time, Parker went back to school, earning a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Western Carolina University.

Parker has been an active supporter of local and national Democratic campaigns. After volunteering for the 2008 and 2012 Obama campaigns, he managed Sen. Terry Van Duyn’s 2014 campaign for state senate and Quentin Miller’s 2018 campaign for Buncombe County Sheriff. Additionally, Parker worked for Pisgah Legal services to help implement and enroll community members in the Affordable Care Act.
